    Default RMS Olympic

I am looking for some help to firm up some details relating to an Albert Matthews, who was taken ill and lost his life at St Vincent's Hospital, New York on 03/03/1919 whilst serving on RMS Olympic.

I can tell you that he was born in Fareham, Hampshire and was born in 1891.

His CR10 Identity Certificate is numbered 380644 and I would like to know if this is his personal number. I would also like to know when and where he would have signed up.

Here's hoping some kind person can shed some light on this one for me.

    Many thanks!

Port of registry was Liverpool. I believe he was a fireman onboard.

    Olympic - 131,346

Originally enlisted with Royal Engineers on 14/03/1911 at Southampton, Hampshire for a short service, prior to joining the MN.

Son of Richard and Emily Matthews of 2 Paxton Road, Fareham, Hampshire.

Brother of William James Matthews, who was a Driver, Army Service Corps during the Great War.

I don't really have much else I can offer I'm afraid.

    Regards
    Steve

His CR10 Identity Certificate is numbered 380644

If that is what is shown on his CR10 then Yes that would be his Discharge Number for the Merchant Navy that was allocated on his Joining up.
(Sorry incorrect info see later Post on this )

Will look deeper and see what I can find later

I would also like to know when and where he would have signed up.

That should be on his CR10 ???

That Number you quote will not be his Official Number on joining the MN ,he will have received a Personal Number as well that is his British Seamans Identity Card Number on Top of the CR10 See Green Card Pic
    cHEERS Still looking

    eg only

You can also try the Southampton Archives which has a Service online for a fee!

    Central index of Merchant Seamen

Fourth Register of Seamen combined index (1918-c.1972)

Consult the register in BT 364 (1918 to c.1972). These index cards are on microfiche (the originals are held by Southampton Archives).

Steve, a bit of trivia you may not be aware of.

A nurse by the name of Violet Jessop was on the Titanic, the Olympic and the Britanic.
The only person to survive the three disasters of the White Star liners.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

    Hi HD John
    sorry to correct,
only two disasters, Titanic and Britannic, the Olympic survived until she went to the breakers in 1938.
Violet`s Niece was interviewed last night on TV,
I think she died in 1977.
