In 1959 I was on the Good Hope Castle, of Springbok Line of Cape Town,. under the South African Flag and registered in Cape Town
they sent us to Mombasa, Kenya was having a famine, the Mau Mau were performing os the farms were knackered.
We had 12,000 tons of food on board for the famine relief.
As we were coming alongside, because we had the South African flag as our ensign, on the quay was a big crowd, and they were screaming abuse at us and then started to throw stones, They were shouting "You come shore side we go for kill you."
so much for trying to feed them, they do not like South Africa in those days and would prefer to starve than take food for their kids.. let them eat cake in future

Nick Ref flag etiquette. It was also the practice on some ships especially passenger vessels to fly the flag of your next country of destination on sailing , starboard forward yardarm again. JWS
