I was also told that there was another UCL ship in Las Palmas, which picked up the distress call. She lowered her lifeboats to go to the assistance of the Cape Town Castle, the authorities refused them permission to leave the harbour.

There is an awful lot on the internet about it I think somewhere along the line as an apprentice we had to study the relevant em notice and throughout every ship I'd been on Union castle and clan line with the ownership that use Hautosaf . Not sure of the spelling . As a compressor oil that apparently it's totally bombproof and very expensive

Maybe one of the most depressing news items about the Titanic was the one in a major newspaper of the time, which said.

'All passengers saved from sinking ship by the Carpathia"

    Sadly not so.

The press too often forget the formula for good ,journalism. Print the facts first and then build the story. Too often those who write for newspapers get a false impression of their own powers and capabilities, print a story and think they can twist the facts to suit. They are totally wrong and have no more power than anyone else, in the past they could print what they wanted and have little fear of repercussions. Today they get caught out left right and centre. Honest people wouldn’t print some of the stories they come up with. JWS

Eerie black and white photos of Titanic survivors, anxious loved ones and the Carpathia passenger liner's rescue emerge a century on from the day the ill-fated ship set sail.

RMS Carpathia was sailing from New York to Austria-Hungary on the night of Sunday, April 14, 1912, when it received the distress signal. The reporter was obviously the great grand father of one of todays Daily Mail reporters by the looks of it. This photograph hangs on the wall directly behind were I am sitting now. Both my Grand fathers were on the building of Titanic both were Riveters. Grandad McColl was originally from Greenock and was a bad tempered old git, he suffered from little man syndrome, funny though I was the only one of the grand children that he ever bothered with. Grandad Lewis was Belfast born and a gentle soul. But not to be crossed he was as hard as nails.I have seen him in action when he caught a gypsy stealing from his allotment. 20180411_125132.jpg
