    Reference: BT 391
Title: Registry of Shipping and Seamen: War of 1939-1945; Combined Office Merchant Navy Operations, Seamen's Pouches
Description: These records detail the sea service record of merchant seamen engaged in the liberation of Europe (6 June 1944 to 8 May 1945). They give the seaman's name, discharge 'A' number, rank or rating and qualifications together with details of the ships on which they served.
The catalogue entry for each seaman's pouch within BT 391 includes: surname or patronym, forename(s) or initials, discharge 'A' number with prefix code where appropriate, date of birth and sometimes place of birth. The place of birth information, (where it exists), is as it was endorsed but place names have not been verified.
A discharge 'A' book and the related registered discharge 'A' number are issued to a seaman on joining the service. During their service seamen carried their discharge books from ship to ship as proof of their character and as a guide to employers as to their experience and rating.
The registered number has a regularised format that normally includes a prefix letter, referring to the nationality of the seaman. The seaman retains this number throughout his or her service even when the discharge 'A' book is lost or destroyed. In common parlance the book is referred to as the discharge book or papers

    Hi J,

Grandad had lots of siblings and one was Patrick Joseph he stayed in Tralee (I even visited him) I believe most of them did but Grandad moved to London after the war so that's where my branch ended up.
They have a history of naming sons after themselves and each other so the Patrick you know maybe a nephew of my Grandad....

They lived in Abbey Street , Tralee and my great grandparents were John Conway and Mary Jane. So you could see if any of that matches for your friend but Conway and Patrick are both fairly common in Ireland which is why I had so much issue finding info lol
John was a bystander shot in the street for breaking a curfew and his son John was murdered by a British solider shot in the back and his Grandson John was a Jesuit missionary shot dead by rebels so if this is in his family history it would obviously be significant and memorable.

Thanks Doc! I will pass this info onto Dad, Myles has a son who may want to look into it so this would give him a good start..... (if he hasn't already)

#15..Claire I worked for a few months in a place called Fenit at the mouth of the Shannon, and was not too far from Tralee being the closest nearest large township. Went there one time to buy a new pair of shoes. The salesman couldn't find the second shoe in the box so ran around the other foot ware shops to see if they had. They didn't, so he said. He would sell me the one half price. Don't think he was joking either,or he could keep a good straight face. That part of Ireland is beautiful countryside.as others is beautiful also. Fenit used to dry out a low water and had about 5 pubs for a couple of hundred population, so were useful when the ship was lying high and dry. Rgds JWS

Kerry is stunning! They have a real cheeky sense of humour too. I am glad you enjoyed it there, I grew up in London but always loved holidays there
    Thanks for sharing your story!

    Re # 15.
    Claire,
On Monday the first of November 1920, which was All Saints Day, the RIC (Royal Irish Constabulary) fired at crowds leaving Mass in Tralee. For the next seven days, the Black and Tans made all the local businesses shut their doors and allowed no food in or out of them. After warnings, they imposed a strict curfew and shot people who appeared on the streets.
The Black and Tans were responsible for the death of your gt grandfather "JOHN CONWAY". Another person named as Tommy Wall was also shot dead for not heeding the curfew.
The Black and Tans were created after the First World War by Winston Churchill.
They were ex British soldiers recruited to reinforce the United Kingdom's police in Ireland.

    Fouro.
