Saw the same a little earlier in today's MNA circular: The Pulse. It gave no further info as you have posted will bring back a few memories for a few.

Had by chance they published more I would have stayed mum.

    Keith.

It is coal, but not cargo, she is bunkering, in all probability it is India, both men and women were employed. They still had smaller versions of these black gangs when I lived in Pakistan, which didn't exist when this photo was taken. Have you noticed the 'Carley Liferaft' and that the ship is completely painted grey which suggests that it may have been taken in WWII era

Used to be a big Indian population, men and women, employed at Steamer Point Cappy, but the background land suggests the Indian Sub Continent, but that's only guessology!

When I was in Vizagapatnam, east coast of India in 1952 we loaded Manganese Ore just like that, a continuous line of humanity for three weeks round the clock dumping it down the hatches.

Did you ever wander off into the jungle Brian, can't imagine you not doing so, it was like going back in time 2000 years (not that I personally know!), nearly naked men and women going about their lives with no radios, TV's etc and building canoes out of logs with an adze shaped tool and setting fire to the inside to smooth it off or make adzing easier. On the larger fishing boats they carved them in two halves longitudinally from separate logs and then joined them together with wooden pegs, quite clever and practical, as if the boat got damaged they could patch it or if severe damage just put on a new half. As could not speak their language we talked by drawings in the sand, don't think they had seen many palefaces wander that far in or be interested in what they were doing, they could see I meant them no harm so were very approachable and the kids very curious about this paleface. We've had our experiences and it only takes a word from someone else to revive them, we were so lucky we lived and served when we did
