Lives of the liners: Sad demise

8 Comments by Doc Vernon Published on 28th November 2017 12:00 AM

I wrote earlier today of thehandsome French Flandre.

Her fate: In 1968, she wassold to Costa, becoming the Carla C (and used on charter to then newlyformed Princess Cruises & marketed but not formally renamed PrincessCarla). Later she was rechristened Carla Costa. In 1992, she was sold to the Greeks, to Epirotiki Lines, and became the PallasAthena. But in March 1994, just outside Piraeus, she burned andwas destroyed beyond repair. The scorched hull was towed to Turkey laterthat year and scrapped. The end of the Flandre.

And by the way, her sister, the Antilles, you will remember burned out in the Caribbean, off Mustique, in January 1971.

I sailed on QE2 many times on the world cruises, bu the accommodation was old and dated. she was popular only because it was like a good club, everyone went back on her year after year, so when you joined you knew everyone.
Comparing QE2 to the modern ships is like comparing a 747 jumbo with a Dakota.
I switched to Holland America after she went to Dubai, and the smaller ships have far better accommodation and more spacious
The ships I go on usually have around 850 passengers good accommodation , so plenty of space and No crowding.
Those BIG ones like "WOTSIT OF THE SEAS" have about 5,000 passengers and 4000 crew, 9,000 people on, I would never ever sail on those, But they only do short cruises, usually Miami to West Indies, 7 day cruise.
I meet many people I know from previous cruises every time I join a ship.
My next one sails from San Diego, California on 25 March for the Hawaiian Islands, Kiribati, the Society Islands, to see my many friends in Bora Bora , Moorea, Pape`ete, Rangiroa, Rarotonga, Raitai, Tuomotu, Nuka Hiva, Marquesses, and back to San Diego, a week in a hotel there and then home.

Now What is wrong with that. Pure Paradise, if the French haven't finished destroying the Polynesian Culture and its peoples..
    .
I have also placed a deposit for 2019 from Miami to West Indies, Columbia, San Blas Islands, Panama, several ports in Ecuador, Peru with a trip up the Andes to Machu Pichu, the lost city, then Chile , Easter Island with those giant statues been there before, fascinating, then Pitcairns Island and the decendants of the Bounty and my friend Jackie Christian, then to see my many friends in the Tahitian group of Islands, then to Tonga , Four ports in New Zealand, four ports in Australia round to Darwin , Komodo Island, Bali, Java, and then Singapore.
These are incredible voyages. Try it, you may like it, why does anyone want to die with money in the bank??

    Cheers
    Brian

In my opinion the classic appearance of ships has disappeared, they were graceful and elegant in many respects the same applies to motor vehicles,a lot are just ugly boxes on wheels.

    Hi John
yes that would be great. not seen you since we met on the old QUEEN MARY in Long Beach in 2012. that will be Six years.
We will be staying at the BEST WESTERN BAYSIDE HOTEL on Ash Street near the rail line. The bottom of Ash Street opens up by the STAR OF INDIA, and the Wyndham Hotel is on the corner.
We arrive back in San Diego on Sunday 22 April and check out to fly home on Friday 27 April.
So anytime there would be OK.

I remember last time we met in the Observation Bar on the Queen Mary,
after you left , a Steve from Seattle arrived and I had a few more drinks with him then an old friend from Scottsdale, Arizona, turned up and then I ended up with the Great Grand Daughter, [ below], of Captain Rostron of the Carpathia, and of Bolton, who rescued the survivors of the TITANIC.
So it was a real good memorable day.
Later I fell off the bed in my cabin and broke my left knee, cost me a fortune in the Medical Centre on the `Queen Elizabeth` that we joined later in San Francisco,
    Anne was not amused.
    The photos are below,
    Keep in touch
    Cheers

Ships, cars, aircraft, over time all have changed to the point where at times it is hard to imagine how they manage to work.

It is called progress and to some extent I agree, but so much of it now is superficial that it becomes hard to know what is good or bad.
General cargo replaced by container ships, which also look much like blocks of flats, aircraft so big you wonder how do they get off the ground.
Cars that can go from zero to 100KLM in 3 seconds???????????? Do you really need to get away from the lights that quick.

But given time even the ones of today in a generation or so will have changed even more.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.
