Hi Marian,

Thank you for uploading this clip from that memorable film 'The Color Purple' (forgive U.S. spelling). For me, this beautiful film had it all. It won 'best picture' at the 1985 Oscar's plus a slew of other awards for cast and crew alike yet, unbelievably, it still received some critical misgivings and for the life of me I shall never understand why. It covered the whole gamut of human experience and emotion..... love, sadness, humour, good music, ironic comeuppance, the true meaning of friendship and, above all, the durability of the human spirit, as portrayed in a flawless performance by Whoopi Goldberg.

As you may know, the original song 'Miss Celie's Blues' (aka 'Sister') was written by Quincey Jones and Rod Tempeston with lyrics by Lionel Ritchie (which shouldn't surprise me, but it did). This track, recorded by Tata Vega, was brilliantly mimed in the film by Margaret Avery who played the part of 'Shug' Avery. For her performance she shared the 'best supporting actress award' with Oprah Winfrey, no less. A great scene from a great film....thanks again.

That clip of the film, [Whoopie Goldberg's eyes] and that song in particular, a firm favourite of mine too Roger. Recently heard a Canadian singer Molly Johnson singing the song also...exquisite.:)
