The Engineer at my local Garage where I have just had my car serviced, ex Furness Withy Engineer.
He has a son, aged 24, he is a time served Joiner or Carpenter and he wants his son to go to sea.
He has asked me if I can find any way he can go to sea. I dont know where to look so any help would be appreciated.

I always thought that was the main job for an Engineer Brian. They would always join you for a drink as long as they were not paying

whilst not strictly a job at sea there are a number of outfits up here who provide riding crews or crews for dockyards etc. to carry out on board repairs. Flew home a number of years ago and got talking to a couple of lads who were coming back from a long spell on a fred olsen job getting refitted in Hamburg. One was a master carpenter and he said he was working almost constantly, either in yards or sailing doing refurbishment.
Perhaps your pal should look at this avenue in order to at least get a foot in the door and excperience a bit of sea life.

There was an advert on my comp earlier on for people wanting to join the Merchant Navy. I looked at it out on curiosity and on my goodness am I glad I joined when I did in 1957. The stuff they say you need nowadays to join is unbelievable. Its far to much for me to repeat on here but if you want to have a look (and a shock). the site googles at. SSTG.

Let me know what you think of it, im sure your comments will be interesting.:hair_raising:
