Hi Chris, I vaguely remember Jack Pugh, Did one trip with him on the Africa, June/Sept 67. Only time I sailed on the Bamenda was May '68 relieving as 3rd Eng. Jack Pugh wasn't onboard then, not sure if George Brand was on, but I remember the name.
Did you see the notice of Bob Owen's death?
Hope you are keeping well, regards Russ.

Hi Russ, I'm keeping as well as possible for our age. I can't say that I ever met up with Bob Owen (or is it my memory is fading!!)
there seems to be a lack of people that "chat" about Palm Line these days (most likely a lot have kicked the bucket)
I trust that you are keeping well.
Regards, Chris

I was an EDH on the Bamenda Palm from November 66 to January 67. can't remember the skipper's name (I'll take a look at my Discharge Book later), but we had a great Christmas anchored off Lagos - barbecue, free beer etc.

I was in the Gambia Palm for two trips 1955-1956 and the Chief Engineer

was George Brand, very quiet but really pleasant man.
We used to have a few drinks together.

Cheers,
Peter (Pat) Baker.

PS. Does anybody know what happened to George?

Hello, I'll ask my Dad when he sailed on The Bamenda Palm when I see him next week, and maybe take the laptop so he can have a look at this :)

I sailed on the Bameda Palm under Captain Pugh and Commodore Brand in 1960 and 1961. I have lots of fond memories of that particular boat. Chris was a very good shipmate. I still have a photo of both of us sitting on deck chairs supping a beer in Africa.
I left the Bameda and went to the Ilesha for a couple of years. I met lots of people iwho influenced my life and significantly changed my Merseyside view of Geordies. My watering hole is the Ship Victory Hotel in Cow lane Bridge Car Park Chester, You can email me HERE (http://www.merchant-navy.net/forum/sendmessage.php?do=mailmember&u=6025)

I have recently met again Ms Carol Shields. I met Carol by invitiation from George Brand in Lagos circa 1960. Carol's father was Harry Shields the Palm Line manager in West Africa. I am also keen to now what happened to the Silver Fox. Carol is investigating.

This site has been operating for a number of years ( Many thanks to the guys who set it up and operate it) I have posted messages on it a number of years ago when I first entered it and came across the name Chris Roberts. This led me to Russ Kennedy. Then I have not entered the site for a number of years I entered the site yesterday and saw the thread posted by Chris in February last year, 2012. As he points out many of us have crossed the bar and the chatter is fading. I guess Chris, Russ and I are about the same age (71 years). I often think of the guys I sailed wiith and I have to take off my hat tto them for a) being a good bunch of guys and b) teaching me a lot with respect to life and engineering. I have lshown here a list of the names that come to mind on the Bamenda and Ilesha. Amongst the name are key member of the infamous G.W. men. whose side line was making Jam and causing havoc on unsuspecting ships.

Derrick Malone Senior Second Engineer
Dick Byrne Junior Second Engineer
Russ Davidson Senior Third Engineer
Billy Fisher Senior Second Engineer
Brian Bowers Senior Second Engineer crossed the bar lfour years ago
Ray Lamb Senior Third Engineer
Mac Senior Third Engineer
Larry Holmes Junior Third Engineer
Alfie Bateman Junior Fourth Engineer
Trevor Knowles Senoir Fouth Engineer
xxx Smith SeniorThird Engineer
Barry xxx Senior Third Engineer
Bob xxxx Chief Electrician
Colin Walker Second Electrician
Barry Brown Junior fouth Engineer
Chris Roberts junior Fouth Engineer
Russ Kenedy Junior Fouth Engineer
Vic Nelson Senior Third Engineer
Emmy Moore Chief Steward
John Second Steward

I would very much like to know any word of how they are or what has happened to them.

I left Palm Line in 1967 went to Shell Stanlow for 7 years . Spent 7 years with Manchester Liners. Then went abroad as an expat Project Enginner to Libya , Thailand., Brunie, Malaysia. Then in 1991 went into an oil and Gas design house (Foster Wheeler) Left them four years ago and set up a Study and Travel Company sending Colombian students to schools outside of Colombia. I still sail with the Foster Wheeler Yacht Club and am due to be at the EEC ( European Engineering Challenge) yacht racing week at Palma in fiirst week of May. I am in Colombia until 17th April and then I head back to my watering hole which is the Ship Victory in Cow Lane Bridge car park Chester ( Joe Gildea owner/ manager a true friend who would make you welcome). My hiding hole is in in a mobile home park in Llanrug, North Wales ( search for Brynteg). You are welcome to visit and stay over and enjoy .

Neil, So good to hear from you.
What a list of names, quite a memory you have. It has certainly jogged mine. Bill Fisher, sailed with him on the Ibadan, he was quite a guy!! Russ Davidson, did quite a few trips with him, brilliant shipmate, very experienced, as he used to say he was a proffessional 3rd!! Brian Bowers, I sailed with him on the Makeni Palm as Senior 3rd, he was Senior 2nd. Hull to Liverpool, 4 days, a nightmare!! Took us 10 days to discharge xxx thousand tons of palm oil into road tankers. Steam trace heating failed, we had to light fires under the discharge pipes to keep the oil flowing. All good fun!! Ray Lamb, rings a bell, but I can't put a face to the name. Bob xxxx Chief Electrician, could be Bob Metcalfe, also a Geordie, great guy, sadly crossed the bar a few years back!!
Funnily enough I left Palm Line the year after you. Always said I would leave the sea when we started a family. I worked for the MOD (Ordnance Factory in Birtley Co Durham) for about 11 years, then, would you believe it, I Joined Shell in 1978, working in Aberdeen on the North Sea Development. Stayed there until I had a heart attack in 1999. Emigrated back to the North East ending up just a couple of miles from Russ Davidson's watering hole, the Fox Hunters!! It's a small World. Another name for you, Bob Beadle, he was Junior 2nd on the Lagos, I was Sen 3rd, Norman Moat Sen Elec Engineer. 1965 ish!
Keep in touch.

I sailed with Palm Line from 1957 til 1961 as third mate and second mate.
I remember Gordon Williams as he was C/Oon one ship I was on but I don't recall which one.
It certainly was an experiance I won't forget and many a dinner guest I have regaled some of the west African tales.
