Hi everyone,

My name is Tom West and i work for a law firm, Boyes Turner, which acts for the widow of Fred 'Frank' Morley. Sadly, Frank died of a cancer called mesothelioma, which is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos.

Frank worked in the Merchant Navy between 1953 and 1957 on a number of ships for various companies. We know that many merchant ships in this period contained asbestos, which was used as lagging on boilers and pipes.

As you may know, over the years, many shipping companies have been dissolved or taken over by other companies. In order to allow Frank's widow and remaining family to receive the compensation they are entitled to, we need to trace the insurance companies that insured these ships at the time, if any existed.

The ships (and companies) we know about are as follows:

Alva Bay (owned by Alva Steam Ship Company Limited)
Stanfirth (Stanhope SteamShip Company Limited)
Alcyone Hope (Alycone Shipping Company Limited)
Sterling Valour (Sterling Shipping Company Limited)

If anyone has any information that may be able to help, please reply to this post. Any information could be extremely important and

Frank's family would be most grateful for your assistance.

Many thanks

Tom West

Hi Tom.
A mate from sea school back in 49 died from asbestosis acouple of years ago and was trying to get similar information. he was on deck and the inscurance companies said deck crew weren't involved as it was mostly lagging down the engine room. But the deck crew used to help with fixing the deck winches whose pipes were lagged with asbestos, as you know it dosen't take but a whisker of that stuff to kill you many years later.
Good luck with your search .
Cheers Des
